Improve My Game Jam 31 devlog #1


Hi yall!

Welcome or first devlog, made for the Improve My Game Jam 31!

A little bit about the game before we get in the meat of it.

Saving Pebble is a small roguelike with turn based combat.  Every fight is a one on one and after every victory you can upgrade your character in different ways. In the start of the game you have 3 kind of action you can take, attack, defend and use potion(in the start it's just heals). As you progress in the game you can purchase different passive and active abilities to craft your run build. Your HP not regenerating between normal battles so you carefully have to manage how you handling incoming damage and enemy attack patterns.

I think for starters that's enough, a lot of thing will be decided after your valuable feedback :) 

So start with where we are in the beginning of the jam.

Start
Humble beginning

The very basic is the Ui is already in place but still missing a lot of feature. There are no background and the player buttons are still placeholders. 

Lot of the basic systems are already implemented, like the basic fight loop, some of the status effects and and a lot of smaller sub systems.

We only have a very basic upgrade screen, no death screen, no main menu, credits or any of that fancy thing :D

So lets talk about what we wanted in the game in the end of the jam:

  • Functional  main menu, death screen, upgrade screen, credits screen
  • Almost feature full fight screen
  • A Update the enemy attack sequence system(currently it's just going trough a list of actions)
  • Adding 2-3 new functional enemies
  • Some quality of life features
  • Music and sfx


Now let's see how far we made in the given timeframe!

I wouldn't bore anyone with a lot of the internal fine tuning, so just take a look some pretty pictures, and I highlight the most important  developments.

Successfully implemented status effect display system, on change the icons do a little wobble.

Our first implemented enemy, he is very sleepy :)



New fancy upgrade and skill store screen.


And here we can take a good look on a lot of things. We added a new enemy, the Butcher who will get angrier every time attacked but cools down if let rest. The updated enemy attack sequence let us create more elaborate enemy patterns as the gameplay progresses. We can take a look at the upgraded player action buttons and the enemy move prediction bubble. 

The sound design yet nonexistent, but that's soon will change!
